Five Contradictions That Will Explode Your Business Profits
by James Delrojo
Sometimes you hear or read business advice that appears to directly contradict advice that you previously heard. Which advice should you follow? Often the best strategy is to follow both sides of the contradiction. You just have to know when each side should be applied. The Power of Focusing Big Your business has to think big in order to get big. There are times when you need to focus your attention on big ideas, big goals and big plans for achieving those goals. Focusing big motivates you and your key performers and starts the chain of actions that leads to profitable business growth. The Power of Focusing Small Big thinking is essential but if you only think big then you fall into the trap of becoming a dreamer rather than an achiever. The practicalities that need to be addressed in order to realize your big plans are usually a collection of small things that need to be done well. While doing those important tasks it is best to give them 100% of your attention. This is why focusing on those small, but important steps is a necessary ingredient for business success. The Power of Focusing on Tomorrow Focusing on where you want your business to be tomorrow helps you make plans and take the decisions that will lead to business growth. So many business owners and managers become so distracted by the pressures of now that they never put the time aside to decide what they really want the business to be in the future. By allocating regular time to focus on what you want your business to grow into you are creating the first step to achieving that future. The Power of Focusing on Now Focusing on tomorrow sets your direction but always remember that now is the only time that actually exists. The present moment is the only time that you can actually take action therefore it is the only time in which you can create reality. Ensuring that you spend the majority of your time fully focused on maximizing the quality of your present moment activity will ensure that you maximize the quality of the outcomes you receive. The Power of Focusing on Planning A business without a well thought out, practical plan is a business that is going nowhere. Develop a long term plan and then plan each year, plan each month, plan each week and plan each day. Plan tomorrow at the end of today. Plan next week at the end of this week. Plan next month at the end of this month. The Power of Focusing on Action A plan can only be brought into reality by a series of actions. The whole purpose of a plan is to maximize the probability that you are taking the best possible actions and not wasting time or energy on non productive activities. Once that plan is decided on then your focus should shift to be fully absorbed in the actions that your plan requires. The Power of Focusing on Outcome Focusing on your desired outcome will allow you to be flexible in the way you achieve that outcome. Keep part of your mind focused on the outcome you are pursuing and compare it to the outcome you are receiving. If your process isn't producing the desired result then change the process. The Power of Focusing on Process While engaged in a process it is important to do it as well as possible. Although one small part of your mind remains focused on the desired outcome the major part of your mind should be fully absorbed in the process that you are currently involved in. The Power of Focusing on Income Income is the life blood of a business. A strong, regular, profitable cash flow provides a solid foundation for everything else in the business to function at its best. Income rarely increases by chance, it increased as a result of focused activity. The Power of Focusing on Expenditure Each expenditure is either a liability or an investment. Focusing on expenditure and being fully aware of how much is going out, where it is going, and what return you are getting will help you ensure that you remove waste, keep liabilities at the necessary minimum and maximize the investment returns on your other outgoings. Conclusion Business advice can often seem contradictory, however if you think in terms of when and how to apply each piece of advice you may find that these apparent contradictions are in fact compatible. Knowing how and when to apply the five pairs of apparent contradictions discussed above can guide your business onwards and upwards. YOU can be successful in all areas of your life!
